Thursday, July 23rd marks the beginning of our 16th Annual Green Thumb Sale!  Our biggest sale of the year only lasts for 2 weeks, but the deals are amazing, and the prices are never lower.  This year’s sale is the biggest ever, and a majority of things in the store are on sale during the event.  You can download a complete sale list here. Remember though, this sale ends August 2nd, and some items may sell out quickly at these ridiculously low prices.  Shop early, and check back often as more items will probably be put on sale as the sale progresses!

The 2009 Green Thumb Sale is over, but will be back next summer!  In the meantime, be sure to check out all of the other specials we currently have here on our blog!

cornus_florida_cherokee_chiefMother’s Day is Sunday, May 10th!  We have lots of different plants and gifts for Moms, so stop by and don’t forget to celebrate your Mother this Mother’s Day!  Here are 5 gift ideas to get you started:

  • Hanging Baskets.  Hanging Baskets and Mother’s Day just seem to go together.  You can quickly and easily pick up 1, 2, or 10, and give the gift of instant color and appreciation.
  • Dogwood Trees.  One of the most popular items for Moms has been and continues to be the Dogwood Tree.  We have a large stock of them that are currently in bloom.  You get extra points if you plant it for her.  If planting is not your thing, we can deliver and plant it for you, but it won’t be in time for Mother’s Day (we are a week or two out for installation projects).
  • Lilacs and Rhododendrons.  Blooming now, and both old-fashioned favorites, Lilacs and Rhododendrons are two cherished and appreciated plants that make a great and timely gift.
  • Gift Cards.  So maybe you don’t know exactly what to get, but you know that your Mom loves to garden.  Well, give her the gift of a day wandering the nursery and picking out the plants that she loves!  We offer Farmington Gardens gift cards in any denomination.
  • A little help in the garden.  You can buy plants by the truckload (we don’t mind, and will gladly help you load up your truckload of plants), but what will usually be most appreciated is just a little bit of help in the garden.  Take a day and help pull weeds, pick up some plants and help start a vegetable garden, buy and plant a tree, trim hedges; these are all things that don’t take a lot of effort but really mean a lot.

There are lots of ways to show that you appreciate Mom this Mother’s Day, but the most important thing is not to forget and acknowledge the special day in one way or another.  We will be here all weekend with a nursery full of plants and gift ideas to choose from, ready to help you in any way possible!

Since gardener’s tend to be visual, tactile folks, big extravaganzas like the Yard, Garden and Patio show at the Oregon Convention Center this weekend provide tons of ideas and inspiration.   There are interesting seminars as well as elaborate display gardens upon which to feast your senses.    And if you go, please don’t overlook our $10 coupon in the back of the magazine.   Bring all your new ideas to us and we’ll help you make them a reality!

pruning We get questions all the time about how to prune correctly– everything from fruit trees, grapes, blueberries, rhododendrons, and other ornamentals like roses, etc.   It can get confusing, can’t it?  So I wanted to let you know there is a wonderful opportunity to learn from the experts, and in a format that will allow you to actually prune!  And its free!  The OSU Extension Washington County Master Gardeners and the Tualatin Valley Garden Club are once again hosting their annual educational workshop on Saturday, February 14, 9 AM to 12 noon.  It will be at the Wold home, at 8580 SW Wold Drive, Aloha.  (Directions:  Take Farmington Road to SW Grabhorn Road.  Follow Grabhorn past the Jenkins Estate to SW Wold Drive.  Signs will be posted.  Please consider carpooling, as parking is limited.)  If you have questions, call the OSU Extension Office, 503-821-1150.
